updates from a precipice

personal

new projects, new life changes

been a while since i’ve posted here - i’m just now getting the free time and inclination to be more active in indie web stuff again, and i figure i’d start with an update of what i’ve been up to.

aside from working, i’ve been trying to get serious about my youtube channel. a few months ago, i dropped “sonic adventure, bomb rush cyberfunk, and the power of hanging out” - a love letter to videogame hub worlds. just last week, i also dropped “star wars: andor, political apathy, and the best post-credits scene of all time”. both of them - particularly the andor video - have been some of my most successful work to date. as with everything i do, it’s hard for me not to agonize over every little mistake and be frustrated about the ways they didn’t come out like i wanted, but i’m trying my best to focus on the fact that people are engaging with the stuff i make and seem to really like it!

i am still working on paperboi, the RSS reader that i teased in march. progress has been slow due to the whole “needing to make money to live thing.” the urgency of the project - especially given the continued deterioration of social media - hasn’t been lost on me, though. if you want to help, please continue sending me RSS feeds and newsletters from local venues in your city, as the unplatform database is going to be critical to paperboi’s success.

speaking of the unplatform database, i’m going to be adding a few new features to it soon. first, i’m going to have it use query params to load its state, which means that you’ll be able to link specific sets of filters to people when you send it (i.e. you can filter for newsletters from your city and then send that link to your friends so they can see the same version of the list as you!)

secondly - and probably more importantly - i’m going to implement a public API so folks can query the unplatform database and easily use the data in their own projects. this is easier said than done (legally, logistically, and technically), so it’s taken a while for me to seriously start work on this project - but hopefully soon, you’ll be able to use unplatform’s data to create your own tools to help aggregate indie web resources for both your digital and meatspace communities.

i think that’s all for now - just letting everyone know that i’m alive, and quite busy. i also might be moving soon, which may slow down the process of everything i just mentioned significantly. i’ll be in touch, though!
